In The Pocket- for two sopranos and chamber orchestra

“In the pocket” is an expression to explain when the rhythm section (piano/guitar, bass and drums) of an ensemble is locked into a rhythmic groove and working as a cohesive unit. I draw on the colloquial term from my experience as a keyboardist playing a variety of genres including jazz, rhythm and blues and gospel. While each of those musical styles bear their own language and performance practices, the term “in the pocket” holds its original meaning.

Using laid back rhythms and complex harmonies, this piece ebb and flows in a syncopated swagger. I use a pulsating triplet figure that undergirds the bed of polyrhythmic flow performed every instrument. The two sopranos perform as part of the orchestral fabric singing non sense syllables throughout the piece and providing a lyrical and percussive texture.

This piece was commissioned by the Albany Symphony (NY) and performed by Dogs of Desire on June 1, 2018.
